Jailbreaking with redsnow can damage the software in the iPhone causing random problems like safari and other apps crashing. But it is worth if you want to “jailbreak” your iPhone, but I didn’t hear you mention jailbreaking in your question.
If you just want to unlock your iPhone for use on other GSM carriars, look into getting a gevey sim card (you can find them on eBay for really cheap). It does void your warranty or damage your iPhone software so your phone will still work perfectly.

Hello Bryan,
There are lots of safe methods. As long as you follow all the steps you given by the program, your support team you will be OK.
If you are not confident, the best way is to use a site that offers a customer support, so you can contact them any time you need.
Just remember to follow what you are told and contact the support if something unusual happens - do not experiment.

The safest way is to use Redsn0w. You can find download links and full instructions here http://rotilda.com
It’s really easy and no disadvantages what so ever, only advantages.

If you go on http://www.myiphoneunlocker.com you can unlock any iphone, even with the latest 3.0 firmware. I did it the other day, it only took about 5 or 10 minutes

You will avoid you phone warranty. If anything goes wrong with your Iphone apple won’t support it. Unlocking phones have alot of bugs such as freeze ups.
